About us

Tervetuloa kotisivuillemme. Koiria harrastava perheemme muodostuu nelijalkaisten
perheenjäseniemme lisäksi miehestäni Sakarista ja aikuisista lapsistamme Ilonasta
ja Heikistä. Niin anoppini Greta, kuin oma äitini, ovat myös tärkeä osa perhettämme.
Kennelnimeni on Vaisas ja olen perheemme työssäkäyvä äiti. Ilonalla on oma
kennelnimi ”Sandstrand”, mikä tulee kesäpaikkamme mukaan. Koiraharrastus
kulkee varmaan suvussamme geeneissä, niin kuin monella muullakin koiria
harrastavalla perheellä. Isovanhemmillani oli jo 1900 – luvun alussa koiria, mm.
leonberginkoira (Saksan tuonti), bernhardilaiskoira sekä tietysti hyviä
suomenpystykorvia. Vaikkei vaarini ollutkaan varsinainen metsämies, niin varsinkin
30 – luvun loppupuolen lamavuosina oli tavallista hankkia metsästämällä tervetullutta
lisäruokaa perheelle.

Vaisas, our own little homekennel of Lhasa Apsos consists both of our four legged
family and our human family: my husband Sakari, our grown up children, Ilona and
Heikki and myself, the mother of the family, Varpu. Both my mother in law Greta and
my own mother Kerttu, have very important roles in our family also. Ilona, our daughter,
has her own prefix "Sandstrand"named after our summer cottage location.Dogs as a
hobby must, like in many other families, run in genes.My grandparents already had
pedigree dogs, a Leonberger (German imp.) a St. Bernard and of course some good
Finnish Spitz. Even though my Grandfather wasn't a real huntsman, during the time
of depression in the late 1930's, it was quite a common habit to hunt some extra
food for the family.

Omalla äidilläni oli myös kennelnimi, jolla hän kasvatti mm. muutaman venäjän-
vinttikoirapentueen sekä yhden suomen ensimmäisistä tibetinspanielipentueista.
Lapsuuskotonani oli useita koiria. Äitini (1920-3/2008) oli
kiinnostunut uusista roduista, joita Suomeen alkoi tulla ja kehittyvästä koira-
näyttelytoiminnasta. Hän oli kuitenkin opettajan toimensa lisäksi aktiivinen
siluettitaiteilija, joten koiraharrastus on ollut aina vain yksi osa hänen elämäänsä.

My mother had a prefix of her own and she has bred some Borzoi litters as well as
one of the first Tibetan Spaniel litters here in Finland. At my childhood home there
always were dogs. My mother was interested in the new breeds which turned up
here in Finland and also in the developing dog show activity. My mother, who passed away at the age of 87 in March 2008, was a teacher and an active sihouette artist as well, so the dogs
have always been just one part of her life.

Mieheni lapsuuskodissa oli suomenpystykorva Pepin lisäksi springerspanieleita,
joita myös käytettiin koiranäyttelyissä. Greta – mummun koti on mieluinen
kyläpaikka koirillemme ja mummun koiranhoitoapuun on aina tarvittaessa voinut luottaa.

When my husband was a child they had a Finnish Spitz called Pepi, and later on his
parents have had English Springer Spaniels, whom they have entered at dog shows too.
Our dogs love to visit Greta's home and we can always count on her as she is always
willing to be of use if we need some extra help with the dogs.

Vaisas - lhasa apso pentueita on syntynyt vain muutama, kasvatamme hyvin
pienimuotoisesti, mutta tosissamme. Emme tee pentuetta, josta emme haluaisi
itsellemme pentua. ”Totta toinen puoli”, kun sanon, että siihen minkälaisia lhasa
apsoja haluan kasvattaa, ovat vaikuttaneet lapsuuteni vinttikoirat ja se, että äitini on
siluettitaiteilija. Mielestäni lhasa apso ei saa olla epämääräinen karvakasa, vaan
koira, joka kantaa itsensä kauniisti ja, jolla on vapaat, vaivattomat liikkeet. Se ei saa
olla raskas, eikä kömpelö. En pidä karkeista raskaskalloisista koirista, vaan toivoisin,
että apsolla olisi kauniit itämaisen pikku koiran kasvot

Kingcharlesinspanieleista olemme olleet kiinnostuneita jo useita vuosia ja varsinkin
Ilona on koettanut opiskella niistä niin paljon kuin mahdollista. Madden myötä apsojen
keskellä on nyt ensimmäinen oma kingcalle. Toivottavasti saamme myöhemmin
tulevaisuudessa myös laadukkaita kincharlesinspanielipentuja Ilonan Sandstrand prefixillä.

There are only few Vaisas-lhasa Apso litters. Dogs are a serious hobby for us, but not
a profession or a business. We also plan the litters very carefully, thinking of character
and quality. I say often in play, that the Sight Hounds at my childhood home and the fact,
that my mother is an silhouette artist, have had an effect on what kind of Lhasa Aspso's
I want to breed. For me a Lhasa Apso is not an obscure shaggy clump, but a dog who
carries himself beautifully, who has nice outlines and has free and easy movement.
A Lhasa Apso may not be too heavy or clumsy. I don't like Lhsa Apso's who have heavy
and coarse heads. I think that a Lhasa should have a beautiful oriental expression.
We have been interested in King Charles Spaniles for years and especially Ilona has
tried to learn about them as much as possible. Now when "Madde", Chic Choix Chrystabelle,
a tricolour King Charles Spaniel, came to us, we got our fist Charlie of our own. Let's hope
that there will be also quality Charlie puppies some day under Ilona's Sandstrand prefix.

Vaikka koirat ovat tärkeä osa elämäämme, niin on mielenkiintoista harrastaa hieman
jotain muutakin. Ilona on ammatiltaan hortonomi, ja hänelle kasvit ovat myös rakas
harrastus. Vanhan kesähuvilamme puutarhanhoito on etupäässä Ilonan vastuulla.

Though dogs have a special part in our life we do have some other interests too.
Ilona is a horticulturist by profession and for her, flowers and plants are a pleasant
hobby too. The garden of our old summer cottage is mainly Ilona's responsibility.

Voi sanoa, että kesäinen huvilaelämä ja kaikki siihen liittyvä, on eräänlainen
harrastus koko perheellemme.

You can say that summery “villa life” is one hobby, or way of life, for the whole
family too. The cottage is very old and the garden is rather wild, you can always find
something to do over there.

Viettäisin mielelläni enemmänkin aikaa piirustuspöydän ääressä tai
nukentekeleiden parissa.

I would love to spend even more time with drawing and painting or making
different kind of dolls.

Tällä hetkellä Ilonalla ei tahdo olla enää aika mieluisalle hevosharrastukselle,
mutta kukapa tietää mitä tulevaisuudessa tapahtuu.

Ilona has been a keen rider but she finds it hard to find some spare time for
that at the moment. Let’s see what will happen in the future.

Kaikki harrastukset tuovat paljon iloa elämään. Mainitsemisen arvoisia ovat
eläinystävien lisäksi kaikki rakkaat ystävät, joita eri harrastusten kautta olemme saaneet.

I would like to say that all the hobbies we have bring much joy into our life, but I would
also like to mention all the dear friends we have learnt to know when we have been
